Britain’s Strongest Man 105kg - Event Write-Up

Posted in 105kg, Events on September 26th, 2008

Many thanks to Dave Archer of Sculptures Gym in Seaford, East Sussex for this excellent write-up of the recent Britain’s Strongest Man 105kg 2008 event.

“An amazing performance by local hero, Scott Reid, left the 600 spectators cheering all afternoon for the British Strongest Man Champion (under 105kg weight) on Sunday 14th of September 2008 at the Downs Leisure Centre. He decimated the competition which had turned up to challenge the defending champion. It was an outstanding day, watching 11 competitors line up from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It was the final showdown of the top 11 athletes qualifying from many rounds held all over the country. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s Double Scott!

Posted in 105kg, Events on September 24th, 2008

On Sunday 14th September, Scott Reid gave it 110% to retain his Britain’s 105kg Strongest Man title at the Downs Leisure Centre. Despite some controversy over the scoring in the Viking Press, Scott hung on to the title by just a 1/2 point margin over friend and training partner, John Hobson. Jason Talbot (winner of the 105 at London’s Strongest Man) came in an impressive 3rd. We’d all like to thank the event sponsors - Wave Leisure Centres, The Builders Club and Physio Footprint - for the valued funding allowing this excellent event to take place. Here’s to 2009!

So, do you think wrestling should be a strongman event? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

If You Can’t Lift It, Beat It!

Posted in Events on August 27th, 2008

It seems that in Basque country, lifting and dragging aren’t the only ’stone-related’ sports enjoyed by the locals. When all else fails, they pick up iron rods and beat the c**p out of it too! To be exact, teams of three take turns to drill as many holes as possible in a stone block in 30 minutes - by hand. Have these guys never heard of RSI?!

Spot of Harrijasotzaileak Anyone?

Harrijasotzaileak - Stone Lifting the Basque Way

That’s stone lifting to you and I - the Basque way. As part of the week long carnival that is “Aste Nagusia” in Bilbao, Northern Spain, a demonstration of Basque rural sports (or Herri Kirolak) takes place each day and includes such novelties as stone lifting, stone dragging (by men and oxen!) and hand stone drilling (a particularly grueling activity, more on that later). This guy is Inaxio Perurena seen here performing single-handed floor-to-shoulder reps of a 200kg stone cylinder. I’m told he’s 24 years-old and has a personal record of 285kg (though not sure if that’s single handed!). The man next to him is his father, Iñaki Perurena, a legend in Basque stone lifting with a personal record of 315kg

Read on to see the lift from start-to-finish..
